It’s time we questioned the true priorities of the CCLA, since they seem to exhibit major selective bias when it comes to who they will support. Certainly they appear not interested in supporting the civil liberties of senior drivers…the very ones whose sacrifice made it possible for them to be free to exist in the first place.
On July 29, 2014, the undersigned wrote to the CCLA about their apparent hypocrisy since my letter to them about the severe loss of civil liberties of senior drivers as a result of the unjustified scheming between the MTO and a business couple went entirely without a response.
As background: in an Ottawa Citizen article the Canadian Civil Liberties Association came to the aid of those charged with offences by Police and who were placed in pre-trial detention. They claimed that “there is a presumption of innocence that we base our justice system on which is not being reflected here”.
I (the undersigned) happened to run across a similar article in yet another newspaper not too long ago, where there was a large outcry of Human Rights violations because our Government attempted to reduce the free medical coverage given to illegal immigrants, which, in fact, exceeded the coverage provided Canadians.
I explained to the CCLA: “It makes me wonder where your priorities are, when many months ago, I sent you an email complete with evidence to show that the Governments of Ontario , Alberta and British Columbia were discriminating against senior drivers in those Provinces, by requiring them to take special testing, because the Governments falsely alleged that “ the older drivers have more accidents than other drivers and constitute a significant traffic risk”. These governments had no justification whatsoever to make these statements. They showed complete disregard for the rights of the elderly — specifically the presumption of innocence — which you have repeatedly stated as being the cornerstone of the Justice system. To this day, I have not received an answer from you.”
I continued on in my letter “The elderly of this country are those that worked hard, obeyed the law, and made this country as prosperous as it is today. You send a strange message in your actions, that if you want rights break the law.
But I will again remind you that the elderly in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia continue to be traumatized and by again bringing this to your attention, I hope you will take the time to view conclusive evidence that the elderly have had their Human Rights violated by their Provincial Governments.”
So folks, unless we work together to regain our rights and freedoms, discrimination on the basis of age, though illegal, will continue with the blessings of our provincial Ministry of Transportation — and, since I still have not received a reply from the CCLA, with apathy of the very groups who claim to be advocating for human rights.
It’s time to get moving…contribute generously to the legal effort to end this abuse against senior drivers. The law is there to protect us all; we need only get off our duffs and fight back.
Yours Sincerely, Ed. Rockburne, RCMP, Retired, erockburne@cogeco.ca. July 29, 2014
